Building a Song From Scratch [PSH]

Welcome to this complete lesson on building a song from scratch.

Now that you have Arpeggio Sweeping and a Left Hand Pattern, let's talk about how to actually implement these into a song, and build one from scratch.

Now, this is actually a lesson from my Project Captivate course, which teaches a lot more moves similar to Arpeggio Sweeping and the Secret Sauce Left Hand Pattern, so I'll reference those other techniques throughout the video.

But don't worry, you can still use the concepts to work on the two techniques you learned, and any other captivate techniques you learn from here on out.

Brainstorming Your Song: The 4 Emotional Quadrants
Build a Song From Scratch: The 7 Step Process
 Key points from the lesson:

1. There are 4 main quadrants. Think about the emotional feel you'd like your song to have and alter your dynamics and notes per second to create that sound.

2. When you're first learning a song, learn it “bare-bones” (just single note melody and block chords). Once that's down pat you can gradually add in the flashy stuff.

3. Follow the 7 step process to “Lego Block” build your song. As you do it for more and more songs, you'll be able to have a more fluid creative process, but when you're first starting out, stick to the steps exactly.

4. Like anything else, practice SLOW and HANDS SEPARATE first for each step. Then gradually ramp up the speed and put hands together.

Action Step:

Time to take action! Pick a song and start going through the process step-by-step. If you don't know how to play by ear, just look up the chords or look up a tutorial on YouTube.

Then start adding in everything else. At every step, practice hands separate and slow first. You can gradually ramp up the speed and put in hands together as you go along.

Zach undeniably knows what he's doing, you can progress very quickly. It's crazy  when I look back at my level in October and now. It's a great feeling to progress quickly and feel very natural with the piano.
